Excel: The Last Microsoft Office Stronghold

parislemon:

There was a good, brief discussion on Twitter tonight about Microsoft Office. Specifically, the fact that it’s 2014, so why the hell is anyone still using it?

To be clear, I know that a lot of people have to use it in their work environment. But that’s more because their office buys it for them and forces them to. It’s a strong method of lock-in that is seemingly still going strong after all these years.

The reality is that there are now more than enough solid-to-better alternatives for much of what Office offers. And some, like Google Docs and now even the Apple iWork suite, are free.1 And so it seems to me that increasingly, Office persists more out of habit (“I don’t know how to do this without Office”) and misguided fear (“what if I need Office for some reason?”) than necessity.

I haven’t used Excel in ~10 years, Google Docs is my go-to, LibreOffice is my offline backup.

Content, Content, Content

Intel just sold its unreleased television service to Verizon. TiVo just shuttered its hardware business. Google TV flopped. Boxee sold out. Aereo keeps getting sued. Roku keeps trying new things. Netflix keeps spending wildly. Amazon more wildly still. And where on Earth is that Apple television?

Where’s the future of television we’ve been promised every year for the past decade? It always seems to be coming “next year”. And I have a hunch that 2014 may be no different.

Here’s the thing: there isn’t actually a technology problem in this space. That is, while the current solutions offered by the cable providers mainly suck, they suck because they can suck. Big Cable is holding all the cards. And they know it.

If ever there was one imagine to encapsulate the entirety of the Windows 8 shitshow, this is that image.

Windows 8 is being rejected at such a scale that one of Microsoft’s largest partners is being forced to advertise the “return” of an older OS.

Have you tried the Nexus 5? As someone who has moved from Android to iPhone I am starting to get that 'itch'. Would going from a iPhone 5s to the Nexus 5 be a total shit storm?

parislemon:

I just got one a couple weeks back. Still testing out (iPhone 5s is still my primary, obviously). It seems very fast. The screen is beautiful. The camera leaves a lot to be desired, but apparently they’re trying to fix that through software. We’ll see.

Sort answer: if you care about photography, you probably won’t want to switch back. Or if you use Verizon (which I do), you can’t. Otherwise, seems like a great device — best Android device I’ve used yet, though I haven’t had too much time with the Moto X.
